March 2010 - Spring? Did someone say spring? It’s snowing outside my window. The fourth big snow of the season. Even the most die-hard winter lovers (AKA my husband) are tired of the white stuff. But while the flakes fall, I also hear the chattering and chirping of returning birds. And though my daffodils and tulips look like shriveled stumps of green right now, I know soon enough they’ll be bursting into a riot of color outside my front door.

A lot of changes over the winter: A new decade—the aughts are over! A new office—good-bye kitchen table! A new laptop—the old one died a long, painful death. And a new book to work on-or as I like to say-unravel. Outline? What’s an outline?

All this fresh energy is making the last, dragging days of winter seem to fly by. Quicker than I’d like, I’ll be complaining about the humidity, swatting mosquitoes, and counting the minutes until my manuscript is due on my editor’s desk.

How about you? Tired of winter and ready for the reinvigoration the changing seasons always bring? Or enjoying the last cold, damp days to snuggle on the couch with a cup of tea and a good book? Write and let me know!

December 11, 2009 - As I write this, it’s close to sixty degrees and beautiful outside, but I can’t fool myself. Winter is here. Maybe not technically, but deep in my heart I know I have three long months of early sunsets, lost mittens, and layers of sweaters ahead of me. I also have snuggling in front of my woodstove, an excuse for hot chocolate with lots of marshmallows, and Sunday afternoons of chili and football (ok, so football only lasts until February, but by then I’m resigned to the season and I can still have chili so all’s not lost!)

But the best thing about winter in my estimation is the reading. A great story while I’m curled like a cat by the fire or sipping my marshmallow-frothy cocoa. And when my team loses and I need to forget the ref’s bogus call? I head straight to my TBR pile.

So the next time you find yourself snuggling, sipping, or cursing a call, pick up a book and you’ll have that perfect escape in hand.
