Happy Autumn!

With pools closing, temperatures dipping, and school buses rolling, it may have seemed like fall for the last few weeks, but in fact, today at 9:04am, the autumnal equinox will occur and a new season begin.
The term equinox derives from Latin’s aquaeus meaning equal and nox meaning night since it’s around this time of year that night and day are just about equal in length. It happens twice a year in spring and fall when the tilt of the earth is neither toward or away from the sun.

OK, science lesson aside, the beginning of fall has always been a time to mark change. Celebrations abound throughout the world from Iran to Japan to China to Europe and the U.S. with festivals and holidays and special ceremonies marking the occasion when summer’s bounty gives way to darker days and cooler nights.

  • Ancient Greeks said it was the moment when Persephone—bound by those pomegranate seeds she ate—returned to Hades.
  • Christians celebrate Michaelmas the feast of St. Michael as a holy day of obligation.
  • Neo pagans and Wiccans mark the turn of the season as Mabon, a time to celebrate the harvest and prepare for the coming winter.
  • Sept. 21st was considered New Year’s Day during the short-lived French First Republic from 1793 to 1805.
  • The zodiac changes from the meticulous, practical, analytical and reliable Virgo to romantic, easy-going, flirtatious, and peaceable Libra. (That’s me!)

I know plenty of people who look on autumn’s beginning as a time to mourn for those lost golden days of summer, but I’ve always held a special place in my heart for this time of year. I love the crunch of leaves under my feet, the smell of smoke from woodstoves, and the honk of geese coming in to land on fields brown with corn stubble. I love pumpkins and mums sitting out on porches, low-hanging fog across the river, and who can forget—the beginning of football season.

Maybe it’s a holdover from those long-ago school days or blessed relief from Maryland’s summer humidity, but my energy levels rise at the start of September, and I feel ready to push on with new projects or complete those I put aside back in the spring. A good thing too since I’m hip-deep in my current project and could use an infusion of fall vibes to jolt me forward toward my HEA.

So what about you?

Do you mark the change from summer to fall with any special ceremonies or family traditions?

Do you enjoy this change in season or would you rather it stay warm and sunny forever?

Write to let me know!
